Children Health Plans

It is a general tendency to overlook the requirements of children when we think of health insurance. It is not easy to find a suitable health insurance plan that would be suitable for the requirement of your entire family including your children.

To provide help to families, US Congress passed a law about ten years ago and established a health insurance scheme for children, which is known as State Children’s Health Insurance Program. This plan aims to cover the growing number of children living in the United States who are not covered by any health insurance plan. There are many families who cannot afford private health insurance because their income is insufficient to afford such health insurance scheme but their income is too high to claim benefits from Medicaid scheme.

Under this scheme, the family is charged maximum of 5% of their gross annual income and many cases they are eligible to receive medical treatment free of charge.

The coverage under this scheme varies from state to state but all states provide a minimum coverage that includes well-baby and well-child physicals, immunization and emergency services.

If a child is already covered under any health insurance scheme then he or she is not eligible to get state insurance coverage.

In case your children is not eligible to get medical care under the state plan, then you will have to decide whether you want to cover your children under a family policy or you want to have an individual plan under the child’s name. Generally, it is more economical to get your child covered under family policy plan. But, in case you have only one child then taking out an individual policy for the child would turn out to be a cheaper option.

Most colleges and universities provide treatment to their students for minor illness and injuries. But, all students should have some form of health insurance to cover them against major ailments and injuries.

You should always try to have your children covered under your own individual or family policy as most of these policies would cover these children even if they are away at school. However, some of these policies might put certain restriction regarding coverage and you should check it carefully.

In case, you feel that your child require their own individual health insurance policy while they are studying in a college, there are a number of insurance companies that are ready provide such a policy.

Ultimately, as a parent we have to ensure that our children are adequately insured against health hazards.
